Last week we popped into London to visit a couple of exhibitions , amongst them , my eldest son and I visited the newly opened Cindy Sherman exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery https://www.npg.org.uk/whatson/cindy-sherman/exhibition/ . I’d never seen any of Shermans work before starting on the MA , (strange , now I know!) and well what can I say…… Amazing, inspirational, perplexing, and just down right weird ! Bodie and I were just so Impressed, no, in Awe of how she transformed herself, even down to how she would hold her body, her bones, and muscles to convey certain things, such as age. It was magnificent. It was totally captivating, and mesmerising seeing her body of work right from being at art school in Buffalo in ’75 through to the present.

The 70 film stills shot between 1977 and 1980, were just beautiful. Both individually, and as a collective on the wall together as one whole art piece. The whole collection ran like a Hitchcock movie , and drew me totally & utterly in. It came as no surprise to me to discover that these images were the defining moment that started her career. I was reading in a 2012 New York times article about how the pieces relate to feminism, and the female role , whatever that is , and how we ‘create’ our roles in life like a part for a movie. Intrestingly was Shermans comment  in the article “‘I’m so sick of using myself, how much more can I try to change myself?’  The big surprise in her recent work is that she has made less of an effort to do so.” [ Gopnik, Blake. 2016 . Cindy Sherman takes on ageing [her own] https://www.nytimes.com/2016/04/24/arts/design/cindy-sherman-takes-on-aging-her-own.html First Accessed 14.07.2019 ] . This was mostly just sad, how come I keep discovering all these amazing artists just as they stop doing what they’ve been awesome at, or in the case of when I discovered Leonard Cohen, and then he died the next year after I missed going to his concert with my mother, that just stank ! That said, at least with Sherman , you get to go back over a whole careers worth of work, that because of it’s very nature you feel you get to ‘know’ her , then again, I get the distinct impression, you don’t really know her at all !  I loved the fact that she had commented that she admired Mary Beard, as I absolutely adore her , & her Women & power manifesto along with her, and found it especially interesting how in her latest portraits she had gone back towards the Hollywood movies theme again embodying  , in almost a full circle of her practice, back to the original film still series.
