I gain inspiration, for my photography from many places. Things I see, hear, experience in our everyday lives. I am an upapologetic Cinephile, and love the cinematography of the likes of Wes Anderson (with Robert Yeoman),  Tim Burton, & Quentin Tarantino, all very different, but subtly linked, in their cinematic genius, & very distinctive looks of their films. All of their films have another thing in common, unbelievably perfect soundtracks.

I found both in abundance when I recently watched the Umbrella Academy on Netflix , a comic book ( by Gerard Way lead singer of My Chemical Romance) turned TV series, & have been listening to the soundtrack on repeat ever since. One song in particular in the sound track, has got me hooked. “MARY” by BIG THIEF , written by Adrianne Lenker “Recorded in one take with Mat Davidson from Twain on piano, “Mary” is a song that so flawlessly captures an ineffable, deeply personal experience of the world that it becomes universal. It is the sound of snow piling on the windowsill of your childhood home, of a summer rain slanted against some beloved attic’s cooling roof, of a childhood photograph rediscovered in a faded frame.” [ NPR . Big Thief's 'Mary' Is a Meditation On Resilience And Recovery. Benjamin Naddaff-Hafrey. Accessed 17.06.2019 ] https://www.npr.org/sections/allsongs/2017/05/31/530749628/big-thiefs-mary-is-a-meditation-on-resilience-and-recovery?t=1560793809406  The Lyrics , are truly poetic nature, and straight away take you to childhood, and summer days, which obviously links in so intrinsically with my work. I’ve been thinking a lot about poetry the last couple of weeks, and how it links to my work, and am considering some way of incorporating poetry into my images.

The few lines especially, are just magical.

The planets in rows
Who knows what they contain?
And my brain is like an orchestra
Playing on, insane
Will you love me like you loved me in the January rain?

[Intro]
Burn up with the water
The floods are on the plains
The planets in rows
Who knows what they contain?
And my brain is like an orchestra
Playing on, insane

Will you love me like you loved me in the January rain?[Verse 1]
Mom and Dad and violins
Somber country silence
The needle stopped the kicking
The clothes pins on the floor
And my heart is playing hide and seek
Wait and count to four
Will you love me like you loved me and I’ll never ask for more

[Bridge]
What did you tell me Mary
When you were there so sweet and very
Full of field and stars

You carried all of time
Oh and, heavens, when you looked at me
Your eyes were like machinery
Your hands were making artifacts in the corner of my mind

[Chorus]
Monastery monochrome
Boom balloon machine and oh
Diamond rings and gutter bones
Marching up the mountain
With our aching planning
High and smiling
Cheap drink
Dark and violent
Full of butterflies
The violent tenderness
The sweet asylum
The clay you find is fortified
We felt unfocused fade the line
The sugar rush
The constant hush
The pushing of the water gush
The marching band
When April ran
May June bugs fly and
Push your gin Jacob
With the tired wiry brandy look
Here we go round Mary in your famous story book

[Verse 2]
We overcome the sirens
We look both left and right

And I can feel the numbness accompany my plight
And I know that someday soon I’ll see you
But now you’re out of sight
And you’ll kiss me like you used to in the January night

[Bridge]
What did you tell me Mary
When you were there so sweet and very
Full of field and stars
You carried all of time
Oh and, heavens, when you looked at me
Your eyes were like machinery
Your hands were making artifacts in the corner of my mind

[Chorus]
Monastery monochrome
Boom balloon machine and oh
Diamond rings and gutter bones
Marching up the mountain
With our aching planning
High and smiling
Cheap drink
Dark and violent
Full of butterflies
The violent tenderness
The sweet asylum
The clay you find is fortified
We felt unfocused fade the line
The sugar rush
The constant hush
The pushing of the water gush
The marching band
When April ran
May June bugs fly and
Push your gin Jacob
With the tired wiry brandy look
Here we go round Mary in your famous story book
