In June 2019 I started my MA with Falmouth university as part of an accredited education programme.

This afternoon we had the guest lecture by Austrian artist Lukas Birk . On his website http://www.lukasbirk.com/ Lukas describes himself as

“Lukas is an artist. A storyteller. A conservator. And publisher.”

 ( Birk, Lukas. About page . http://www.lukasbirk.com/about-2/ [ First accessed 16.07.2019 ] )

The purpose of the talk today was for Lukas to tell us about his practice, specifically the photo books that he has published, and his thoughts on when to make a book , or not too, as the case sometimes is. He showcased a selection of his books to us that he has published, and talked about how they had been made from concept, to on the bookshelf ( virtual or physical).

The whole talk was really informative, but given I am thinking I would like to at the end of my research project, look at eventually using book format to display my work , I was especially interested to hear his views and ideas on dummy books, and special or limited edition books as a way of funding the main print run of a book.

My thoughts at the moment, extremely simplified are , to over the next 18 months research alternative education in the UK , in it’s many varying forms and deliveries, and the philosophies behind it. To then, capture families, and potentially interview them for the book, with small interviews, or quotes to go alongside their images or ‘stories’, and then to produce a book on this project.

How to do this though? My ideas at the moment are at a very simple stage, because I am well aware my project, let alone it’s delivery may well change and morph 5 , 10, 20 times before I get to that stage. However, it is good to just have these things in the peripheries of your mind I think, and I especially liked the idea of dummy books , or special edition books (potentially with prints) being sold to fund the project, as , well I will need to think about funding ! I had also considered briefly the idea of some kind of kickstarter-esque type fundraiser, where the people who back the project can buy certain editions of the book for example, and this idea of Lukas’ seemed to fit in very well with that possibility .

In the meantime I just wanted to share this book. Lukas shared it in his presentation , explaining it won phonebook of the year at photo Espana this year. I couldn’t really see it on the small screens we have in conferences so I went on to his website to have a look, and oh my lord, it is just amazing. Everything from the concept, to delivery, and the colours are just divine as well. When I was reading the inside cover, I felt like I had fallen into the plot for a Wes Anderson movie , it just draws you straight in.

There’s also a video on Vimeo of the book as well …..

So, I don’t , at the moment, see my book being in any way shape or form similar to this, but it’s really useful to find the things that I find aesthetically beautiful. I want to be able to look at anything I produce, feel it, and love it, for the end product to be as much a piece of art as the art itself, that is really important for me. Hence why, 1.5/2 years away from this being on the cards, I am thinking about it already !
