08.05.2020 Zoom presentation Newlyn Art gallery
Last Module I wrote about how I had approached Newlyn art gallery about their exhibition ‘Hippo Campus : Where we learn’ , off the back of this I was invited by their curator Blair Todd to present both a talk on home education, and also to show photographs from my project from my MA all focusing on alternative education. Because of the coronavirus this talk was moved online, and happened on May 8th via zoom. Below is the video presentation that I created for this talk that I used to discuss my practice, and how alternative education and my art practice are intertwined at the very deepest level. Also side the video I spoke about how I got into photography, my businesses, my birth photography, and how this eventually led to home education , which eventually led to me being on the MA and producing this body of work. The talk went really well, I had home educators, parents, grandparents, and artists, attending, and the discussion that came off the back of the talk was exactly what I have always wanted from when I first decided to start this project before joining the MA, to open up a dialogue on our state education system, and the alternatives that are available. Not to say one is better or worse, but just to create a discourse that prior to coronavirus, simply didn’t exist. Off the back of this talk I have also taken a booking for a family photoshoot, which also illustrated to me how our art practice and our commercial work is so interwoven and linked. Linking this back to connections, and the Natasha Caruana (workshowgrow) connectivity workshop I wrote about HERE , after this talk I gave The exchange a list of resources I had put together for children who were being home educated that was then shared on their website and social media platforms , and sent out as an email to their mailing list. On top of this, I approached Blare for recommendations for a gallery for my final exhibition as part of my FMP , as I will be needing to book in soon as I will be looking for a relatively large space for my interactive , immersive exhibition I plan to create as part of my FMP. He came back with some really great suggestions for places within Cornwall where I could stage this exhibition, and I plan on following all these up. This showing those threads of connectivity we discussed in the workshop.
