I’ve been looking more at the work of the photographer Niki Boon who I have been following for quite a while now over on Instagram. Niki’s photographs are very reminiscent of Sally Mann’s in many ways. The freedom of an uncontrolled childhood, and children being able to be children. Niki Unschools her four children in South NewZealand, and documents their days living and learning. This is what she says on her website about their lives …
“I grew up on a farm in rural New Zealand, with a childhood barefoot, wild and free. In part my photographic work pulls from my childhood freedoms and adventures that still exist so strongly in my mind. Today we live on a small block of land where I strive to replicate this childhood for my children. It is here in our wild and wonderful surroundings that I endeavour to tell their story. Life as it is. I believe my children are right where they belong covered in mud , running and living through nature. They belong here wild and free and earth connected in a way where the landscape begins and there little souls end. “

I’ve actually just listened to a podcast of Niki’s where she is interviewed over on the family photographer , and what I find really inspiring about her words, and what truly resonates with me, is how she talks about the photographs, and competitions, and the ‘fame’ that came with them, as all great, but what is truly the most beautiful thing to come from her journey, is people contacting her, wanting to know about unschooling, what it is, what it means, how it works, and if they can do it. How her life, her photographs, have inspired them to make the jump into alternative education. That is truly a beautiful legacy to have given the world !
