Week 12 isolation instagram live’s and workshops 26.04.2020

Since isolation started I have been taking part in near enough daily talks, workshops and events in the photography and art world, which has helped inform my work, and my practice exponentially , it’s hard to really explain just how much of an effect these events have had, and continue to have on me.

I signed up for a 3 day set of talk from Elinor Carucci with the ICP in New York, where Carucci talked through her own personal method of photographing her family within her home, touching on ethics, lighting, photoshop, and more.

off the back of this I signed up for her 6 week class that she is running - Photography from Isolation to Communication: Finding Intimacy I had the first one last week where we met all the 14 attendees, presented our practice for 10 mins and why we were there. Signing up for this course was no small decision, as money is tight during this time with neither myself or my husband working, not to mention it is taking place during the term breaks between the MA modules. However, last module break I felt like my brain turned off a little whilst I was on ‘holiday’ so I wanted to keep engaged and active in the art world during the break this time, so this was the perfect way. I am truly inspired by Carucci’s images, and her books are stunning, so it was an opportunity I didn’t want to miss.

I took part in all but two of Natasha Caruana’s workshowgrow  month long timetable of events , with artists like Jenny Lewis, Juno Calypso ,  Laia Abril, Mishka Henner, and many more ontop of Natasha’s own presentations. It was an amazing set of events teaching me about copyright, research, practice, publishing, and self care as an artist, and I gained so much from it. I think the most informative were the Natasha Caruana Laia Abril & Mishka Henner ones where they spoke about their books, research methods and tips on the industry . I am currently awaiting week 5/6 to be released by Natasha over on instagram today, and am more than a little looking forward to it !

ALONG WITH THESE EVENTS, I ALSO ATTENDED A TALK WITH ANA SAMOYLOVA at the MoCP ON HER PROJECT FLOOD ZONE ON 23.04 WITH THE MoCP

which was really intriguing. I am not ‘into’ environmental portraiture or documentary work personally, but her use of colour, and how she portrays these topics was really interesting to me, and I have been following her for some time now on instagram. Through looking on the MoCP’s website for this talk I came across a talk with Justine Kurland, who’s work in highway kind, and girl pictures I have written about , and admired since I came to the course and discovered her work. There is so much about her work that is inspirational, and interesting. Her work with her son Casper as they journey through America in a van, learning about life, and trains along the way, is so connected to my own with my home educated children. As is her work with teenage girls and women. Off the back of this workshop, I have actually decided that if isolation continues so I cannot do the project I wanted for next term, I am going to do a project with my daughter who is about to turn 13, documenting this time of growth and becoming, and the spirituality that comes with this period in a child’s life.

Through looking for these workshop web addresses for references and screen shots, I just discovered Kurland is running a new talk with the ICP in newyork so I have signed up for that as well . This is what this time has been like for me, one talk led into another, and another, and another, and I am creatively on fire with ideas because of it ! It has been artistic life changing for me, and nothing short of that.
