Week 4 Parent Interview – 21.06.2020
Name – Abbi
Children – 10 (in year 5 at school), 8 (in year 4 at school) and 4 years (due to start school in September).
Any previous plans to home educate ? Abbi has always wanted to home educate, but the girls dad, like many partners is reluctant. With worries about access to groups, friends, and the community feel of school.
What have you been doing during lockdown? Had been doing as much of the school work being sent back as possible but then the printer broke so found that hard. Chris Packham videos. Tried Joe wicks but stopped . Self study project on nature, and learning about the environment. Cooking, teaching the girls how to prepare meals. Been using IXL (A maths programme) to do times tables.
Why have you made the decision now ? Abbi feels the girls will not be safe at school because of Covid, but also that school isn’t the best environment for the girls anyway.
Once lockdown is over how do you see your home education changing? Going out to places to learn, ding projects based on places around cornwall, like museums/gardens etc , Looking at the histories of the places they visit , and learning through doing.
Positives so far – 8 year old struggles with friendship groups, so it’s nice knowing she isn’t going to school and being sad all day. The kids and Abbi are more relaxed, less stressed, and generally happier.
Worries – Pressure, the 10 year old is competitive and needs structure whereas the 8 year old is not like that at all. Dad is worried about friends, groups, activities and qualifications.
