Week 5 project development 09.07.2020

This week I have photographed the third family who are considering Home-Educating after lockdown has finished and schools go back.

Shelley had been considering Home-Educating her 6 year old son, but has now come to the decision to not Home-Educate at the moment. I went to Shelley’s house and we discussed her reasons for doing this, what she thought it would both bring and take to and from their family dynamics. How it will alter their lives both for good and for bad potentially, and why she eventually came to this decision. Shelley kindly agreed to let me record us chatting whilst I was doing the photoshoot, so that I could use the audio along with the images should I wish, which is something that I am going to look at over the next few weeks.

I was quite struck when I came back from editing these how strongly these images reminded me of Jenny Lewis’s one day young series. I really enjoy Jenny’s work, and have the book one day young. I really like both the aesthetics and intent of photographing someone within their domestic space, and with natural light, as a juxtaposition of both home comfort and ease, and the claustrophobia that can come from being inside, which is obviously also much more prevalent at the moment after having been in isolation so from from Covid-19.

I am really happy with how these images turned out, and feel they were very successful. I am more than likely only going to include one, or possibly two of these images fig 5 and fig 6. I do very much like fig 3 , however the lighting is very poor in it, as Iw as using such a high iso, so I wouldn’t include it as a final selection in my WIP. The reason I am only going for 1/2 images for this shoot is that I feel as much as it is very important for me to share the stories fo people who only home educate for a short while, or families like Shelley’s that contemplate it, but then decide against, ultimately my project is about the act of alternative education, so for me, this story stops here for Shelley and her son for this particular project, it may well be however, that I revise this in the future outside of the MA to see how her son’s education has progressed and how she feels about her decision later along the line.
