This week, at home with my own children,  I have been experimenting more with tone and colour and shadows , and seeing how they help convey certain emotions in images, as well as symbolism in images. I was drawn to the autumnal colours of the conkers, representing that age of seasons where we go into a hibernation of sorts, all kinds of things are happening that we cannot see below the surface, and this metaphor of how this relates to education. The bursting forth of the conker from it’s shell, and how each one will do it at a time that is exactly right for them, and be rushed by no man. That is a beautiful thought.

Obviously there was the nostalgia here of making our own conkers when we were all younger as well. I remember my brother and I drying them out in the airing cupboard for a whole year until the next to try and get the hardest one, patience is a virtue as they say. I wanted to capture the repetition of seasons and life, and also how we are all so rushed these days, even children, there’s certainly no time for trialing different vinegars ‘marinades’ and places in the airing cupboards to see which produces the strongest specimen.

This last image was interesting to me. I noticed again here, the link between my own work, and Amy, another student on the course, and how elements she is using in her project (the reflections in the worktop, and the manipulation of figures) are subconsciously coming through in my own work, but with my own twists and takes on them. I think we all do this on some level as artists. Specifically in the whatsapp group I am in with a couple of other students, we talk so often, and discuss our work so much with each other, it would be impossible to not impact on each other creatively.

Again this image was playing with the juxtaposition of light and dark , absorption (the concentration of the boys) and reflection (in the worktop in the foreground) are all meaningful symbolism in the project.
