This was another house that I found had beautiful patches of autumn light streaming through the windows.

I will silly at this photoshoot, and made an error. When mum asked if it mattered where they continued after I’d been taking photographs for about an hour or so I replied no, and mum and daughter moved up to the kitchen worktop to do the science experiment. Looking back it was quite obvious I should of asked them to stay where they were. Most importantly so that the images had a continuity , but also so that we were utilising the best light.

It is a hard balance. I am a 100% natural light, and reportage photographer 99.9999999999% of the time, both in work and through this MA, it is what I do, and I think I do it well, so when someone wants to move, I let them move. I don’t want to orchestrate fake moments, I want them all to be real, as they were at this photoshoot. However when I saw that the change in light had effected the colours of the images so drastically, I should of made the decision to move them back to the spot at the kitchen table the daughter had naturally gravitated too when I was first shooting.

Lesson learnt !

As for the images, as a whole I love them. The real interactions of mum and daughter reading through the workbooks together, and navigating those, both the harder moments, and the joyous ones with cause for celebration. I loved how animated and real their interactions and connection was. Then reading through their science box subscription that had been delivered the day before, the trials, and testing, the tweaking of the science experiments to make them work all worked really well.

I was especially overjoyed when the daughter decided to start practicing her gymnastics if that beautiful patch of low autumn light coming through the door, it was perfect, and totally onstage perfection !

SOME FAMILIES KEEP RECORDS OF WHAT THEY HAVE BENE LEARNING, SOME DO TIMETABLES OF LESSONS, SOME KEEP PRIVATE INSTAGRAM OR FACEBOOK ACCOUNTS JUST FOR PUTTING IMAGES INTO OF WHAT THEY’VE BEEN UP TOO. ESTHER CHOOSES TO KEEP A BEAUTIFUL MONTHLY DIARY WITH A BREAK DOWN OF WHAT THEY’VE BEEN UP TOO ALONG WITH NOTES AND IMAGES. HERE SHE WAS CAPTURING AN IMAGE FOR THEIR DIARY AND THEN AFTERWARDS SHE SHOWED ME HOW THEY RECORDED THEIR EDUCATIONAL JOURNEY, DAILY LIVES, AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS.
